Both are semi jalop. One is working in a lab at my university. The prof. I'm working for works with variable valve timing for diesel engines to get crazy MPGs. VTec Yo! Engine dynos! The other job will being and intern for an Austrian auto parts manufacturer (they build air suspension bits for Mercedes and stuff).

Really, $10/hr isn't too bad for a kid just coming out of high school (so much better than the $7.25/hr most of my friends are making). It's all going into replenishing all the cash I spent on the TA so I have money for college.

The lab is working with cummins engines. They are the engines that would go in something like dump trucks and what not. The engines aren't small, but they aren't huge.

Probably. I'm going to Purdue which is pretty close to Columbus, IN where Cummins is based so there is a decent relationship between the two groups (or so I've been told by the prof.).

Yep, there is for sure. Make sure you chose the right group if you do decide to work there - no need to settle for the first group that likes you if you get an offer. Plenty of Purdue people there to give you advice there...good luck!
